Dasent was born in the British West Indies and was educated at King's College London, and Oxford University. He graduated with a degree in Classical literature and was appointed to a diplomatic post in Stockholm. While stationed in Sweden Dasent became acquainted with the Jakob Grimm and became interested in Scandinavian mythology.
