A Bookstore for Bailey?: Adventures of an unwitting business owner
Description:
Based on the belief that storytelling is an effective way to teach the concepts of business, readers of this novel will follow the learning curve of Bailey who, upon graduation from high school, is about to receive a strange inheritance. Her distant Uncle has passed away and willed to her a bookstore in Greenwich Village, New York. Bailey's task will be to learn enough about the world of business to evaluate whether to keep the store or to sell it. For four weeks in July, Bailey and her Aunt Annie, a retired business professor, will meet in Manhattan to ferret out the truth about Uncle Jack and his surprise choice to pass on his legacy to a niece he never met. Readers will accompany Bailey as she meets her Uncle's long-time professional helpers: attorney, banker, accountant, and peers. She makes life-long friends along the way and learns to look at the world through the eyes of a business person.Beginning in 2009, this story has been used as the centerpiece of curriculum for an introduction to business course at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Oregon. The Decision Sciences Institute awarded the course curriculum an Instructional Innovation Award in 2010. The course was designed with a culminating assignment for students to write the final chapter of the novel to offer their decision and explain their reasoning of why Bailey should either keep or sell the store. This novel has two alternative endings written by students of the first course offering.
