Some mysteries are best left dead. Twelve years after a personal tragedy, Doug Sandow returns to Newport Cove and the quaint Maine coast town of Bar Harbor for a romantic, week-long vacation with his wife, Jillian—a trip they hope will renew their marriage and result in their first pregnancy. As they settle into their creaky, century-old hotel, their peaceful seclusion is disrupted by the appearance of the “Alewife” who had served dinner to Doug and his friend Brian the day before their fateful swim in the cove. As Doug secretly reminisces about the events of that long-ago evening, he publicly struggles with a disturbing, persistent presence. Jillian grapples with her own fears and concerns as another unwelcome intrusion rattles the foundation of their marriage and threatens their sanity. Whom can they trust as event spiral out of control? And what about the local legend of a fiendish evil that rises from the sea?
