Gertrude Atherton (1857-1948) was born in San Francisco and lived much of her life in California. A best-selling author in her day, she is remembered mainly for the novels and short stories set in her home state. However, she also wrote stories of the weird and supernatural. The best of them -- notable for what S. T. Joshi describes as the power of their ideas and the subtlety of their execution -- are gathered together for the first time in this collection.
