Description:

City Boy is the mental odyssey of a boy growing up in Minneapolis in the 60's and 70's. It's more of a memoir than an autobiography, meaning it's less factual and more intuitive. The boy is somewhat left to his own devices by way of a liberal upbringing but this is balanced out by being saddled with a rigorous conscience. The thrust of the book is about how the environment - the city - both offers and takes in ways that mold the boy, notwithstanding the fact the character is rebellious and unpredictable. City Boy expresses a desire to be at one with the city as a whole, and that makes it a spiritual book. At times the city is overwhelming, and the struggle is one of survival. Other times the city is a giant playground where city boy has the time of his life. In the end, it's about a search and what city boy finds in his explorations.
