Rain: The Civil War Years

Rain: The Civil War Years is an introduction to the character of Rain and the struggles of Blacks in America during that time. It tells of a band of slaves and their quest for freedom during a time when people were bought, sold and traded as property. State’s rights or American union, personal freedom or oppressive enslavement; it was a troubled time in America and Guthrie’s story delves into the personal conflicts that were everyday life for some. Led by the young hero Rain, the group escapes from a Southern plantation and start on their journey in search of freedom. A group of abolitionists as well as other freedom lovers help in the tricky task of smuggling humans through the Underground Railroad. Together the various groups comprise a team that pulls together with the common ideal of human freedom. That is spirit embodied in the story of Rain.
