Description:
Richard McDermott Miller has had a long and distinguished artistic career. His sculptures are represented in important museums and collections around the world, including the Hirshhorn Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Canton Art Institute, the Butler Institute, Japan's Hakone Museum, the National Academy of Design, Duke University and the Universities of Houston and Nebraska. His large scale commissions are on public view in Dallas, Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina. He has been honored by the American Academy, the Institute of Arts and Letters and the National Academy of Design, which he served as President from 1989 to 1992. Miller's work is in the great figurative tradition of sculpture that had its origins in prehistoric times and attained transforming heights in Ancient Egypt and Greece, Renaissance Italy, and nineteenth-century Europe. Drawing his inspiration from the past, he has revitalized that tradition through a sensitive, highly skilled, and distinctly twentieth century American approach to the figure, particularly the female nude. In the words of the critic, Howard Kalish, "The animated spirit with which he manages to invest his figures enables them to express what only sculpture can and places his work in line with the best of that great tradition."
