It seemed like a good idea to frustrated Union commanders: dig a 500 foot long mine underground to reach the fortifications of the long-besieged Confederates at Petersburg, Virginia, and set off a powerful explosion. On the early morning of June 30, 1864, the mine was packed with 8,000 pounds of black powder and the fuse lit.
