Pueblo Recollections: The Life of Paa Peh

In this autobiographical work, eminent Pueblo Indian Historian Joe S. Sando reflects upon his life and his accomplishments over decades of monumental changes for the Pueblo people. The book begins with his growing up in Jemez Pueblo and living a very different lifestyle from what exists today. His years in the Navy during World War II provided him with lifelong bonds of friendship, memories both exciting and terrifying and a permanent partial hearing loss that affected the rest of his life. After the war he retuned to college on the G.I. Bill. He then began a long career in education and study of Pueblo Indian history, and today is he probably the pre-eminent historian in his field in the nation. Even while following a very demanding career path, Sando found time for family life with his wife Louisa and three children as well as his large extended family at Jemez Pueblo. He concludes this book honoring his family by presenting their complete genealogy. Using colorful anecdotes throughout the book, Sando presents his story with clarity, insight, honesty and humor.
