Description:
"Julius Schlosser (1866-1938) was a grey eminence of the Austrian art historians, officially active at the University of Vienna from 1892 to 1936 through a critical period when the subject emerged and was defined as an academic discipline. Since his lectures were difficult to follow, his written sentences extremely complicated, idiosyncratic, and his devoted students driven all around the world, his work is best known through the work of those students. "The Literature of Art: A Manual for Source Work in the History of Early Modern European Art Theory" is his grand opus, presenting annotated bibliography of all works he could find describing art, including through travel guides from the medieval period through the nineteenth century. Translated from German into French and Italian, other art historians have annotated and enlarged Schlossers work over the last one hundred plus years, including new references and corrections for this, the first English edition"--
