Chickens and eggs (Teaching a theme using whole language strategies)

Written for primary grade students. A Treasury of Themes is an ongoing series of language art themes that web specific pieces of literature within a particular topic. Within each theme the authors have written many activities that allow the students to write around a particular story, poem or song. There are activities for brainstorming, sorting and classifying, student and class bookmaking, dramatics, math, pocket chart stories, and making of big books to do in each theme.
