No expedition ever dispatched by the United States government was better equipped and provisioned than was the army sent to Utah to put down the so-called Mormon Rebellion of 1857.
The United States in 1857 was a nation about to be torn asunder by many diverse issues. Two of those issues were slavery in the South and polygamy in Utah Territory. President Buchanan, who had just won the election of 1856 on the issue of Popular Sovereignty, suddenly reversed himself on the issue of polygamy and sent a large army west.
After hearing of the army heading towards them, the Mormons immediately began developing their defenses. Brigham Young told his legion to harass the enemy, but No matter what the provocation, you are not to kill any United States soldier.
The publication of this book coincides with the sesquicentennial of the 1857 Utah War.
