They include Pere Jerome, a rosy and rotund priest; Miche Vignevielle, a kind private banker; and of course, Madame Delphine, the ins and outs of whose life are revealed as the tale progresses. Many issues are eventually brought into question, including the true lineage of Olive, the young maiden being raised as Madame Delphine's daughter.
