Get Your Hands on Problem Solving Grade 1
Description:
This is the first in a series of books designed to help students become confident problem solvers. The activities in this series introduce students to nonroutine logic and math story problems, plus a four-step plan ans seven strategies for solving them. One of the strategies - Act Out with Objects - is often used in combination with the other strategies: Look for a Pattern, Make a Picture, Use Logical Thinking, Guess and check, Make a Table and make an Organized list. These strategies are tools that students can use for solving a variety of problems. The activities in this book help children develop a sense of which strategies will be most useful for solving given problems. Learning to use the strategies helps children build confidence in their ability to solve problems. This book includes 12 step-by-step teaching plans; 52 nonroutine story problems; blackline masters for paper manipulatives; and ideas for assessment and for using children's books as sources of similar problems.
