Beginning Algebra Thinking, Grades 5 - 6

Students explore eight kinds of problems related to beginning algebra: number combinations, what's the rule, number patterns, ratios, seesaw balances, fraction puzzles, number puzzles, and Venn linking circles. Students use cubes, calculators, diagrams, and other strategies to solve problems. The experiences help students understand the concept of a variable and how to solve equations.
