The 26th edition of Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services details the latest standards of practice in blood banking and transfusion medicine, and includes a number of changes.

Significant changes:

Inclusion of pathogen inactivation to meet the requirement for bacteria detection.
New standard addresses need to provide educational materials to parents when parental consent is required.
Revised requirement for Apheresis, Platelets allows determination of pH at time of issue rather than at end of allowable storage.
Changes to requirements for continuous monitoring of products.
New standard requires process for communicating anonymous concerns regarding safety and quality to executive management or AABB.
