Probabilty Simulations

Graphing calculators are powerful tools for teaching and learning the concepts of probability. With calculators, your students can quickly run numerous trials in a simulation without the tedium that can come from flipping a coin or rolling dice many times. Through calculator simulations, students more easily understand how the observed relative frequency for a large number of trials approaches the theoretical probability, and they begin to understand variability in sampling.

Any graphing calculator with a random-number generator can be used to complete the thirteen probability simulations. Calculator programs for the activities can be downloaded from the accompanying CD-ROM onto TI-82, TI-83, or Casio CFX-9970, 9870, or 9850 graphing calculators, entered by hand from the program listings, or adapted to other calculators following the program annotations.
