Description:
In 1996 and again in 2001, researchers at Boston College surveyed a representative sample of urban Catholic elementary school in the United States. Based on these empirical data, the authors provide insights into this sector of Catholic education. The first chapter of the book examines the legacy of urban Catholic schools and offers a theological and historical rationale for their continued existence. The next chapter examines student demographics using key variables such as socioeconomic status, geography, race and religion. The third chapter looks at staffing patterns, with a focus on teacher qualifications, teacher retention and the principalship. It also examines the role of other professional and non-professional staff. The fourth chapter explores school structure, from curriculum to technology to physical plant and finances. In addition, it highlights ways in which schools collaborate with other community organizations. In the last chapter, the authors summarize trends suggested by the data, and then recommend policies and practices that can sustain and enhance this important ministry of the church. Also available:Endangered Species: Urban and Rural Catholic Schools - ISBN 155833386XCatholic Schools for Children and Youth in Poverty: SPICE Conversations in Excellence 2003 - ISBN 1558333258Our titles help all catholic educators and administrators have the professional resources to meet the highest standards of excellence in Catholic education.
