Middle East specialist Richard Cottam (U. of Pittsburgh) co-authored this volume with his daughter (Washington State University), who saw the book to its completion after his death. Current approaches to nationalism, including sociological, ideological, and behavioral, are reviewed in detail in the introduction. Subsequent chapters discuss the complexities of three compound-identity nation states Egypt, the United States, and China; the psychology of national identity; the impact of national identity on behavior in the international arena; patterns of behavior of non-nation states; and changes in identity (such as after the disintegration of the Soviet Union).
