Trucks had taken over the hauling jobs on the highways, but Joe worked on a ranch north of Douglas, which lacked paved roads, bridges, and even culverts. His tale covers encounters with stolen horses, skunks, a crazy sheepherder, accidents, and colorful characters- all described in the perceptive, humorous style that his readers over the years have come to expect from him.
