Hero to an American President, leader of daring rescues, survivor of shipwrecks, owner-manager of a fleet of towering cargo schooners, shipbuilder and rigger, Captain Andy Publicover (1877-1960) embodied all the best elements of Nova Scotia's colourful sailing traditions. The sea was so much a part of his like that his sons, wife, daughters and his grandchildren sometimes made up his entire crew. This is Captain Andy's story, based on his own accounts and records, from his boyhood on t he south Shore to the war-time tragedy that ended his career.
