This is the story of Swiss immigrants Johan Spiess and his sons John and Edward, telling of their experiences in Texas. Johan was a survivor of the Matamoros Expedition in 1836; he was captured by the Mexican army and drove the carriage carrying Panchita Alavez, The Angel of Goliad, back to Mexico. John and Edward Spiess joined the Confederate army in 1862 and fought in the Mississippi campaign. They were twice captured and held prisoner by the Union army.
