Carmen is a novella by Prosper Mérimée, written and first published in 1845. It has been adapted into a number of dramatic works, including the famous opera by Georges Bizet. Prosper Mérimée, né le 28 septembre 1803 à Paris et mort le 23 septembre 1870 (à 66 ans) à Cannes, est un écrivain, historien et archéologue français. Son père, Léonor Mérimée est professeur de dessin à l'École polytechnique, et sera plus tard secrétaire perpétuel de l'École des Beaux-Arts.
