Excerpt from Gustav Adolfs PageConrad ferdinand meyer, the master of the his torical N walla in German literature of the nineteenth century, was born in Zurich, October 11, 182 5. Meyer was the scion of an old patrician family and bears the characteristics, both mental and physical, of such an origin. His father, Ferdinand Meyer, from whom he inherited his love for history together with the talent for artistic portrayal of historical scenes, devoted him self to the service of his native city, and being of a weak constitution literally laid down his life on the altar of that service. His two larger historical works deal with that period of religious schism which was later to attract the son's artist eye. The poet's mother, Betsy, née Ulrich, was of distinguished an cestry and herself a woman of unusual intellectual power, religious fervor, and personal charm.
