Of That Extraordinary Man, Alphabetically Arranged; Including the Following Celebrated Political Characters, Drawn by Himself: Antoinette, Late Queen of France, Comte D'artois, M. Brissot, Richard Burke, Esq.Law or change. W1: mull all obey the great law of change. It 13 the moll powerful law of nature, and the means perhaps of its confervation. All we can do, and that human wif dom can do, is to provide that the change (hall pro ceed by infenfible degrees. This has all the benefits which may be 1n change, without any of the 1nconve niencies of mutation. Every thing 1s provided foras1t arrives. This mode will, on the one hand, prevent the unfixzngrold znterc/ls at once; a thing which is apt to breed a black and fullen difcontent 1n thofe who are at once difpolfeifed of all their influence and confidera tion. This gradual courfe, on the othcnfide, will pre vent men, long under depreflion, from being intoxicated with a large draught of new power, which they always abufe with a licentiou's infolence. But withing, as I do, the change to be gradual and cautious, I would, in my firll lieps, lean rather to the fide of enlargement than reflrittion. - Letter to Sir H. Larry/he, M.
