To schizophrenic Charles Guiteau the Divine Inspiration to “remove” President Garfield was real even as he dangled from the hangman’s noose. While Garfield’s agony is chronicled elsewhere, this book focuses on the delusional world of his shooter. Some actions are fictionalized to dramatize the actual story. It took Guiteau five tries to shoot Garfield and there were at least seven attempts on his life.
