Divided Flood

A novel set in present-day Ireland opens a window on the past. Eddie left Cork in the 1950s when the Lee Valley was flooded to build the hydro-electric station. He ran away from a drunkard of a father and from the fear of a ‘shot-gun’ wedding. He never came back. Until now. Vera was persuaded to leave by her first love who was afflicted by the white plague of TB. Life in America was never enough and she returned regularly to visit Kevin. Now that he is gone this trip will be her last. Carole knew from the start that she was adopted. Only after her mother’s death did she realise that she was despatched ‘like a FEDEX parcel’ to America. She comes to Cork to get the facts about her mother and meets a wall of silence. Unknowingly, she disrupts another woman’s painful history. A surprise party to welcome Eddie back seemed like a good idea. But just like the remains of the sunken village are revealed at low tide, secrets rise from the depths and the past returns to disturb the present.
