Alfred the Great: The Man Who Made England.

Alfred, the only English king ever to have been called 'Great', is mostly remembered for letting cakes burn. In this book, Pollard goes beyond the legends and draws on historical and archaeological research to offer a new interpretation of Alfred as the ninth-century king of Wessex who 'decided to fight back' against the Viking invasion and set in train the process that would lead eventually to the foundation of England.
