Description:

Edgar Rice Burroughs published his first serialized story “Under the Moons of Mars” in All-Story Magazine in 1912. Upon completion, this tale became the novel A Princess of Mars (1917). Based on this success, Burroughs devoted himself to writing full time, churning out novels as quickly as he could. In the process, he created two of the most popular literary series in history, including twenty-six novels featuring the jungle adventures of Tarzan and eleven novels about the Mars (Barsoom) adventures of John Carter. A Princess of Mars was in many ways the grandfather (or grandmother) of a many later works of science fiction, inspiring H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Carl Sagan, and George Lucas, among others. If you are new to the John Carter series, we hope that you will also find the works inspiring; if you are returning to the series, welcome back.
