Plot summary of 70,000 word novel: Twenty-two years have passed since Joe Petrini’s ignominious dismissal from Peru as a US Peace Corps volunteer. To block out the pain of his rejection, he adopts an ersatz like in the States until a strange series of events occurs which sends him back to the isolated valley where he once worked. He finds a very different Peru from the one he left with a government recovering from a bloody civil ar against Sendero Luminoso rebels and in the midst of a the Japanese Hostage Crisis. There he meets Maria, the widow of his lawyer friend and puts him on a path of rediscovery of his past errors and future possibilities. Woven within this story of love, betrayal and redemption is an element of intrigue, involving a corrupt police officer and US Consulate official who are responsible for the murder of his lawyer friend and his daughter plus a cast of other characters concerned with bringing the murderers to justice.
