When Jonathan Boot, the Mayor of Mallerton District Council, dies a very public and bizarre death, in the middle of a council meeting, Inspector Cobb's investigation leads him into a world of suspicion, adultery and deceit. Convinced that the mayor's unexplained wealth is the key to solving the crime, Cobb must decide where a missing art collection, the biggest surprise in horse-racing history and allegations of bribery fit into his inquiries.
