Description:

Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte Southworth was a late 19th century American writer. She may have been the most widely read author of her time. In 1844 she and her children moved to Washington D C after her husband deserted the family. She wrote to support the family. Much of her work was printed in serial form in the New York Ledger. Her novels are set in the post civil war era in the South. Self-Raised (1876) is the sequel to Ishmael. Ishmael lived in poverty and had a hard life, but his struggles gave him strength and the courage of his convictions. His life of humility and service to others was truly blessed
