In 2001, Sandra Bruney was one of the 184,000 women diagnosed each year with breast cancer. Her journal, begun as a practical way to keep track of treatments, describes what to expect from surgery, radiation and chemotherapy from the patient’s point of view. She also raises questions that aren’t answered in medical books, such as: How do you tell your three grown sons that their mother has cancer? How do you decide in whom to confide and how much to confide about your disease? How do you deal with depression when everyone assumes you must be happy now that your treatment is over?
