Diary of a Tar Heel Confederate Soldier
Description:
Louis Leon (1842-? ) was a Jewish Southerner, born in Mecklenburg, Germany. He worked in the city of Charlotte as a clerk in a dry goods store. In 1858 he migrated to New York City with his parents. One thing that set Leon apart from many of his comrades was the fact that Leon was a member of Charlotte's Jewish Community. In 1863 he fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and was taken prisoner less than a year later. Eventually in 1865 Leon took the oath of allegiance to the United States. In 1913 at the age of 72, Louis Leon published his Diary of a Tar Heel Confederate Soldier.
