First published in 1896, this is the first of three volumes of stories featuring lawyer Randolph Mason who is depicted as an utterly amoral character who advises criminals how to commit wrongdoings without breaking the letter of the law. By the third volume Mason has become a reformed man, using his extensive knowledge for more beneficent purposes.
