Excerpt from Irrfahrten: Humoristische Erzählung Friedrich gerstacker, der Weitgereiste as his biographer calls him, was born in Hamburg in 1816. His life, after he reached the age of twenty-one, was largely spent in travel. His first journey was to the United States, and lasted six years, from 18 37 to 1843. He visited all sections of the country, leading an adven turous life, working at half a dozen different occupa tions and stopping in one place only long enough to earn the necessary money to take him farther. Subse quent journeys, undertaken at intervals of every few years, took him to most of the South American coun tries, Mexico, California, the Sandwich and Society Islands, Australia, Java, Egypt, Abyssinia, and ended with a final tour of North and South America.
