The reader of the chronicle will find that the Yerkes family, as a whole, has been strongly attached to rural life. During the Eighteenth Century but two of the name abandoned the country for the city, and one of these eventually retired to his rural seat, and there passed his declining years. It is also worthy of note that the business activities Of the family have been chiefly exerted in the line of agriculture, which has justly been placed at the head of the sciences, and which, as Washington wrote, is the most health ful, most useful, and most noble employment Of man.
