The project for a railroad through the center Of Illinois was one of the first propositions for internal improvement in the West. Its construction between 1851 and 1857 Opened up to settlers the rich interior counties of the state; and, when completed, it connected these agricultural counties with the remainder of the country, and made Illinois an essen tial part of the economic system of the United States.
