Excerpt from Ten Weeks in Natal: A Journal of a First Tour of Visitation, Among the Colonists, and Zulu Kafirs of NatalThe present population of the district may be numbered at about Europeans, of whom, perhaps, are Dutch, and from to Kafirs. The only towns are Maritz burg and Durban, distant from each other rather more than fifty miles: but there are several rising villages, such as Richmond, Ladi smith, York, Verulam, Weenen, Byrne, Pine town, 850. The condition of the inhabitants, Christian and Heathen, at the present time, will more fully appear from the J ournal which follows.
