The process of development which has just been traced is shown most clearly in the case of the theater in the precinct of Dionysus Eleuthereus on the southeastern slope of the Acropolis at Athens, which so far as is known was the only Greek theater in existence in the fifth century before Christ (fig. Whether another existed at this time also in the Lenaeum, wherever the Lenaeum was,7 is disputed. But as we know nothing concerning it, we may dismiss it from consideration.
