Description:

Excerpt from The History and Traditions of the Isle of SkyeIt is somewhat remarkable that though nearly a century has elapsed since the writing of a history of the Isle of Skye was proposed by no less literary authority than Dr Samuel Johnson, who promised to revise the proposed work, no person has hitherto undertaken the task. This circumstance, coupled with the frequently expressed desire for such a history, and the fact that many of the interesting traditions of the island were fast passing into oblivion, induced me to devote brief intervals of leisure to collecting historical notes and traditions delating to Skye, and arranging them in the piesent form, which is published at the solicitation of several friends, and as a tribute to my nativa island I only regret that the performance of the task I undertook, though laborious on account of the scattered and scanty sources of information, is not more worthy of the subject. It may be here stated that some of the earlier chapters of the volume were contributed by me about two years since to the columns of the Inverness Advertiser, and that since their publication in that newspaper they have been considerably altered and extended.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
