Excerpt from Modes of BeingPreceding the four chapters Of pivotal propositions and commen taries is an introductory essay which places the work in relation to what is being done in philosophy today, and offers a kind of auto biographical account of the way in which the four crucial ideas of the book developed. These chapters are followed by a section offer ing a brief formulation of some of the denials that could be made to what is here said. These denials, it is contended, mute one another, and taken together add up to what has been afiirmed. The next sec tion deals with the nature of the system as a whole. In addition to summarizing and interrelating some of the major points made earlier, it discusses the basic problems which any system acknowledging a plurality of realities must face.
