ROTHES, EARL OF,(George-VilliamEvelyn Leslie), and Baron Leslie and Ballenbreich, in the peerage of Scotland; b. 8th November, 1809; s. to the honors, as eleventh earl, at the demise of his mother, 30th January, 1819; m. 7th May, 1831, Louisa, third daughter of Colonel Anderson Morshead, of Widey Court, commanding the royal engineers at Malta. The Leslies, a very distinguished race in North Britain, trace their origin to Bartholomew, a Flemish chief, who settled with his followers, in the district of Garioch, in Aberdeenshire, in the reign of William I. and whose descendants adopted the surname of Leslie, from the place of their abode. The sixth in immediate succession from this Bartholomew, was Sir Andrew De Leslie, knt. who married temp. Robert tbe First, Mary, daughter and caheiress of Sir Alexander Abernethy, of Abernethy; by whom he obtained the baronies of Rothes and Ballinbrcich.
