History of Psychology: The Making of a Science

History of Psychology: The Making of a Science provides students with a comprehensive overview of the formulation of the field of psychological science. Starting with a chapter on 21st Century Psychology and then jumping to the dawn of civilization, author Edward P. Kardas is able to make connections between early understandings of human behavior with our current understandings and interpretations of psychological research. Through highlighting the zeitgeist of the era and making connections to the related fields of philosophy, computational science, biology, and social science, students will have a deeper understanding of how and why the field has formed in its current landscape and a sense for where it's headed next.\nFrom the Author\nI have taught nearly all of the scientific psychology courses. My doctorate from LSU was in Comparative-Developmental psychology. When I landed at Southern Arkansas University (SAU) in 1980 I revised the existing Physiological Psychology course and renamed it Physiological and Comparative Psychology. At SAU I added Learning, Research Methods, Developmental, Cognitive Science, and History of Psychology to my course collection. In 2009 I became director of the SAU Honors College which reduced my teaching load by half. Other than General Psychology, I now concentrate on Physiological and Comparative, Cognitive Science, and History of Psychology. This last course now features my most recent text, History of Psychology: The Making of a Science. With its publication I will move back to face-to-face teaching soon. While I once swore I would never teach an online course, Covid took care of that oath. Nearly all of my courses have been online since 2020 with the exception of Honors Seminar, the first course taken by new admitees to the Honors College. With the publication of my new history text I feel duty bound to debut it live, so to speak. I will continue to offer Cognitive Science online, I have not written that text, yet. Moreover, that course actually benefits from being online given that much of its subject matter depends on the computer. I plan to continue working: teaching and writing as long as I can.
