14-year-old Anna's self-esteem is in shreds: she's mocked for being fat by classmates and nagged about her weight by her mother, who claims to be descended from Polish nobility, but refuses to open up about her younger years in Poland and her family's mysterious past.

Anna is a gifted pianist who finds refuge and magic in her music. But not enough magic to step beyond her insecurities of performing in public -until she meets Daniel, a young violinist born in Poland. Their shared love of music creates a bond that ignites a passion in both their playing and their relationship. Together they pursue the ultimate prize in the Young Musicians Competition held by the Polish Heritage Society.

But tragedy strikes ... and Anna flounders, feeling again like the hopeless "fat girl" hiding from the world. Can the magic of her music be enough to enable her to overcome and achieve what seems impossible?
