Description:
Since their 1983 marriage, Ernst and Gail von Metzsch have developed a relaxed and unselfconscious art-collecting partnership whose fruits are diverse and focused. As We See It tells the tale of their choices, their differences, and their enjoyments.
Sparked by the 2016 exhibition of works from their collection at the New Britain Museum of American Art, this volume presents 121 of the paintings they treasure most, along with their reminiscences about the artists who made them and the evolution of their collecting taste. New Britain Museum director Min Jung Kim describes the museum's engagement with the project. Art historian Katherine French's essay places these artists and this collection in the context of recent Boston and New England painting and painting history. The von Metzsch collection offers a deep look at recent representational painting of a certain place and a personal invitation to share a collecting couple's view.
