Steven Parrino: Paintings & Drawings 1986-2003
Description:
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Steven Parrino: Paintings & Drawings 1986-2003, this catalogue features full plate images, installation views, archival images, and an essay by curator Marc-Olivier Wahler. In the late seventies, Parrino began attacking, slashing, tearing, and twisting the canvas, disrupting the traditional Greenbergian celebration of flatness. With an uncompromisingly nihilist attitude, Parrino in many ways mirrored the rebellions of the American punk music scene and subcultures, translating that chaotic spirit in his work. Featuring additional works beyond those exhibited at Skarstedt, this catalogue revisits the artist’s career in painting and works on paper since his last New York exhibition in 2007. Parrino’s Amphetamine Monster-Mill series of black and white photo-collages exhibited in 1995 at Art & Public in Geneva were shown and published only once before and uniquely revisited nearly 25 years later.
