The Shenandoah Valley and Virginia 1861-1865: A War Study

Captain Sanford C. Kellogg, U.S.A., saw firsthand the sweeping drama and utter devastation of the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. In his now classic 1903 war study, "The Shenandoah Valley and Virginia, 1861 to 1865," Kellogg presents the movements of all major Confederate and Union forces in the Valley from the outset of the Civil War through to its conclusion four years later.

Kellogg meticulously researched his subject and presented it in a scholarly format designed to aid the historian, researcher or casual reader. While he did not layer his account with the personal anecdotes that one might find in a memoir, he did sprinkle throughout the narrative some of his own observations about the conditions and battles that he faced in the Valley.

For a straightforward and no-nonsense presentation of the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley, Kellogg's book has no equal and remains to this day both scholastically and historically significant.
