Read aloud and share the reactions of people all over the world as they watched the 1833 Leonid meteor shower.Thousands of meteors blazed through the night and into the morning of November 12, 1833. Lively poems and stunning illustrations entice readers to experience one of the most spectacular sights of human history. Eight cultural settings are represented; a Cheyenne family in Colorado, a family in Switzerland, a family in Guatemala, a stowaway on a ship, an Australian Aborigine, three Colorado mountain men, a Maasai girl, and an English musician. The ninth illustration suggests a North American home in a wheat field, and the poem asks the reader, "The people all around the world who saw these stars ablaze reacted to this bright display in many different ways. Some were afraid, some were amazed, and some were mesmerized. If you had seen the sky that night, would you have been surprised?" In addition to the illustrated poems, discussion guides that meet many school curriculum standards provide information on the science behind meteors, the Leonid meteor shower, and the illuminated cultures, making this children's book a treat for readers of all ages.
