Young Vermonters: Not An Endangered Species is Joe Sherman s response to the claim that young Vermonters can t live in Vermont anymore. In a series of 20 interviews of Vermonters between 21 and 38, from all over the state, Sherman challenges the popular belief that the state is too expensive for them, they can t find jobs, they can t make it there. The interviews are raw, personal, and rich with the voices of the future generation of Vermont. Although the young are not endangered, Sherman concludes, living in the Green Mountain State is tough and getting tougher as the population ages (Vermont is the 49th oldest state in the country), costs rise, and job opportunities for the young shrink in number and in pay. So far, official handwringing and youth Vermonter complaints have been the response to this simmering issue. All it does is get hotter.
